Going Solo

This was originally published in my Prime Lenses Newsletter. You can sign-up for a weekly update to your inbox here.

Prime Lenses started life as a small personal project. The goal was to record at least 10 episodes and get at least 10 listeners. In 18 months it has grown to an audience of thousands around the world and every week I get helpful and supportive feedback from listeners and guests. I am so grateful to everyone who is listening, enjoying and sharing the show. It’s an honour to be in your ears every week while you walk the dog, work out, drive, and move through the world.

Long time listeners will know that I work in games for a UK based studio. I will leave that studio at the end of June as I’ve decided to take six months off to spend more time with the family and perhaps more importantly to you, Dear Listener, work on the podcast. My aim is to make audio, books and fun stuff. If that sounds like something you’d like to support you can head over to Patreon now and join the small but growing group already helping me cover the costs of hosting and sending emails.

Prime Lenses the show will continue to release weekly for free but I am planning to start to push what I’m doing in audio with more in person and on location recording that makes more of the setting to transport listeners to new places. The first of these will be recorded conversations from Wetzlar in Germany. Leica have invited me to their 100th anniversary celebrations this week and I’ll post the fruits of that visit in the coming weeks.

I’m also interested in potentially producing subscriber only content, holding live sessions that get your input and generally making a nuisance of myself online. The Patreon and social media (Bsky, Threads, Mastodon, Instagram) will be the best way to keep up with that stuff :)

It’s early days. I need to finish work and then find the head space to work out what to make but I can see that what I’ve produced so far is resonating with an audience and whatever happens I’m grateful to the folks who reach out and the friends I’ve made as I make this series. It’s a total joy and I can’t wait to get stuck into it.
